Starting and Growing a Business (2)

Hello friend(s), I hope the year has been good to you in one way or the other. I'm sure no matter what position you find yourself now, there must be a reason to be thankful and still have anticipations for just some more exploits. In all of your anticipations, do have a deeper longing for God's love expressed through Jesus for you.
In continuing the piece I started some time ago on Starting and growing a business, I will just jump straight into the next points. You should refer to the first part in order to have an overveiw
of the topic.
What you need to start a business: most times people start businesses for different reasons and without adequate information or idea of such a business. It becomes important to state the following points as the things needed to start a business. If these things are in place I believe you are on a right path for that business to start and/or grow properly. They include:

- Decision on conviction: you should make a decision that it is the business you want to do because you are convinced that it is the business for you. A lot of us don't get to decide about the business, we just find ourselves doing a business because someone mentioned it. Others haven't really thought deeply about this business to be convinced enough to stay with it when the business is yet to break even. When there is no conviction and personal decision(s) made, it will eventually lead to frustrations. Choose the business because you are convinced that is what you want to do.
- skill and Knowledge of the business: you must have adequate knowledge and basic skill required for the business you want to venture into. You should understand the industry practise, customers' behaviour, risks, pricing, operations, market chain etc. You must be willing to keep learning too so that you don't become obsolete.
- Vision (what do you see before you start): make sure you cast a vision at the start and be True to yourself. In casting your vision you should put into consideration your SWOT- Strenghts, Weakness, Opportunities and, Threats. Also consider your responsibilities to people and organisations i.e. how it will affect them and which one will surfer when you start pursuing your
 vision for the business.
- Passion: you must love the business you want to do. You love thinking, talking, practising this business. It shouldn't be a business you can't stand the activities it entails. You should love getting "dirty" and embarrassed about doing your business.
- commitment from People: you need commitment from people you can trust that will be interested in what you are doing. People who will support you in different ways through the beginning phase of the business. Support could be in different ways- advice, encouragement, believe in your business, objective talks, funds, and prayers. Look out for this people, they are usually God sent. As much as possible be accountable to them.
- Market: people must want what you are offering (find them). The vast popullation we have in this part of the world (Nigeria) gives every business a potential market. However, the people who need your business may not be within a location which implies that you should do a survey and find them wherever they are so that you can reach them.
- Basic book keeping method: every business owner must understand a basic method of keeping money inflow and outflow. If you have no idea about this, make sure you learn and understand how to keep your books. Remember one of the points from the first part was that Money is important to measure how your business is doing. You should also check it regularly to compare and see the level of progress or regress which will help make right decisions to improve the business.
- A PLAN: you should have a plan for your business. A two to five years plan is okay for a start. it gives direction and helps measure where you are and what you are going into from the start. A simple plan (no matter how unprofessional) will open your eyes to things you will naturally over look. It will also help you to start thinking about having solutions for possible obstacles you will encounter once you kick off. Keep your plan close to your heart.
- Registration: start thinking of registering your business from the beginning. Make your business a legal entity that can be related with corperately. It is necessary for growth.
- some or all Capital: Capital is considered to be the biggest challenge people have when starting a business. While a school of thought says that Capital is the least of your worries to start a business, I would quickly point out that any investor would request to see your financial commitment to the business. Do your best to have some of the capital. You can begin by saving something monthly

Once you have all these things in perspective, you can be sure that you are not far from starting a business. It is also important to stay in business and not just start. It is said that every business has a seven years to live. That means the life expectancy of a new Business is just seven years. Many businesses die before seven years and many other still die after that. The idea is that is your business survives for seven years then it can last for so long. I want to state that it is not just about the years but what you bring into the business that will make it last.
On that basis, to stay in business, you need the following(not limited to these):
- staying power (Thick skin): anybody who just startedd or is building a business will be faced with different kinds of obstacle and needs a lot of courage and staying power to stay in business.
- People: you need to surround yourself with people who will support and cheer you on in business. This could be friends and families who can also offer free or reduced cost services till you find your feet. They will also not shy away from giving you constructive criticism that will wake you up when you are being lethargic.
- Structure: you should begin building structure as your business begins to make progress. These structure should help you build a business that can function without you ie not solely relying on you. A structure that will function on its own.
- Physical presence (Marketing): production is not complete until it gets to its end user. In order to achieve this you will have to make your physical presence evident to people who need your product or service. You should identify your target market and go after them in every way possible.
- celebrate/share your mile stones: it is important that you celebrate or share significant mile stone and achievement with people you are responsible to. This will keep you encouraged and motivated. It will also help your supporters keep believing in you and your dreams.

On a final note, it is important to say that there is the GOD Factor to every start, growth and end of a business. He created all things, set principles in motion and orchestrates every move. No power or wealth is achieved without Him. He holds all the aces and has the last move. He set people at different positions for a particular purpose and plan. It makes a lot of sense to recognise Him in all your moves and plans.
Do have a great start to that business and a deep root growth as a follow up. Always remember, it all takes a process.

.
NB- Depending on schedule, timing and, other factors, I will be available to speak about this and more at any group session or seminar.

A Lesson from my baby (2)

Hello friends, its good to know you are able to join me on this platform again despite my long absence. I sure missed you. Please enjoy this new post- a lesson from my baby(2).

I recently learnt something new from my son who just keeps maturing daily and has something new on his sleeves. He has come to the awareness that someone isn't pleased with him when he does somethings and he stylishly tries to manipulate the situation. Notable moments are when he throws things away and smash them on the floor and a few other naughty things that could be picked up as habits.
It becomes difficult to spank him because he isn't well aware of some of the wrongs but he also can't have his way with wrong doings always. I decide to be firm on my decisions when cautioning him and sometimes have to tap him with my finger to show his action is totally naughty and not accepted. He cries and drops tears at any of these instances because he knows he has just been stopped from having a self gratification.
The learning point for me is that he comes back to me(or anyone who disciplined him) almost immediately for some kind of mediation. He just needs to hear "stop crying dear, don't do that again" and taken it further with "give me a hug". With the reconciliation process completed, the relationship continues like nothing happened or even closer because he's on my laps and resting on my chest most times following a request that he should be carried.

Most times we run from God when we have committed some atrocities or when we are committed to a sin or weakness when we ought to go back to God, ask for forgiveness and let Him embrace us in comfort and lead us on in the right path.
Hebrews 12v6 says "For the LORD disciplines those he loves, and he punishes each one he accepts as his child." - this goes to say that God's love does not exclude us from a training in righteousness and a punishment to get us on track. He is very interested in every area of our lives and wants to "mess" it up so that it can be well cultured and fitting for a purposed life in God. The major lesson to learn from my baby is to be well assured of your father's (God) love for you and He will always interfere in your life for your own good. You should also consciously run back to Him when you have wronged him or miss the mark (deliberately or otherwise). He remains the loving father whom you can trust even in shame and despair.
Keep trusting and fall into the arms of love.

Thank you for reading and for being patient. I thrust you are doing great and making gains in every area of your life. Keep your head high.

Starting and Growing a Business.

Hello friends I hope you enjoyed the last post "Lessons from my son". I must confess that he keeps opening my mind to deep things to learn from, which means you should expect more "Lessons from my son".

I was invited to speaking at a beauty training that was organized by Swan Beauty- http://swanbeautyplace.blogspot.com (One of the best make over outfits in Nigeria today) in March, 2013. I was asked to talk on "starting and growing a business". I guess I was recommended because of the numerous counsels and push(s) I have offered the founder in the past, coupled with an MBA and numerous marks gotten from experience being in business.

I have shared briefly below some of the contents of my presentation at the event. I hope you find it helpful.

What is a business? A business is a venture you commit to with the purpose of having a reward. A reward could vary from money to self worth (feeling of satisfaction), customer satisfaction (seeing a customer or client happy), busy-ness (being busy) etc
It is good to have a good approach towards monetary rewards before starting any business. This is because the monetary reward is usually a cause of success or failure.
Below are two approaches to have about Money for business success.
 1. "Monetary Reward as Profits should not be the sole purpose of starting a business but it should be a yard stick for measuring progress". Money should not be the main reason why a business is started or operating because it never helps the investor have the right outlook for the business. It also limits one's objectivity in terms of decision making. However, it is a very important aspect of the business that should not be neglected because it is a good measure of progress for the business. Money helps to determine your profit and growth. It could also be a measure of the quality of your service or product. If you adopt this approach, the following will be observed:
 - you will know you are making progress as your profit increases.
- you will know your value with clients when they are willing to pay so much for your service/ product. - you will make decisions objectively which will positively expand and strenghten the business.

 2. You are in business to "make money"(it is not a Non Government Organisation) but "making money" doesn't drive you to do business. This may sound contradicting to the point above but it isn't. This nugget should keep you from being lackadiasical about money. You will actually have a healthy balance for money and keep your relationship with people over money in its right perspective. Making money shouldn't drive your business but making money is what you should always try to do. Whatever job you are doing, you should try to make some profit from it even if it is family/friend. You may want to give a discount or special service but do make some money(profit) for every job you do. There are a few other things that should also drive you, which include- customer satisfaction, quality delivery, brand integrity (a good name) even on time quality delivery. If making money alone drives you through business, the following will likely happen:

 - you will lose more than you think you are gaining (most times the brand leaves a wrong impression in people's mind)
- you will lose friends, families, network opportunities (turning down jobs because of a reduction in your net profit or even over billing could close a future network) -
- you will lose money (deals that can bring some immediate or future income) and experience (opportunity to do more jobs).

An important tip to consider when you want to start and grow a business.

"Start Small, be professional and Grow Big". It is usual consideration to start big and probably compete with long standing and experienced competitors but it is never the best decision. There is nothing wrong with starting at a pace that can accomodate your immediate resources while you aspire to be bigger and work towards it. This is not to accommodate incompetetence or a lackadaisical approach but to make sure you are moderate and realistic in your objective. You should be consistently professional from the start and make sure you keep at it. It will mean paying attention to details and following your proffesion's ethics. With passion, commitment, hardwork, professionalism, strategising and consistensy, you will definitely grow big. It should be understood that "SMALL" is relative depending on availability of capital, influence, nature of business, environment, policies etc. It is better to start small and grow big than to go all out big and reduce to small or nothing (close up).
Starting small will expose you to the following:
- it will help you learn some unique basic rudiments of your business.
 - it will help you set standards and focus on your strenghts and opportunities.
- it will save you from opportunist who will likely take advantage of loop holes in starting big - will save you some money that should be spent on running cost, overhead and set up.

This is a good place to stop and hope to continue from here some other time. Bidding you God speed in your endeavours and hope my little thoughts help inspire you to acheivements.

A Lesson from my son..

Hello friends,
I hope the year has been full of accomplishments despite the numerous challenges that may have come your way.In all these, keep your head high.

My one year old son recently started walking confidently by himself and I must confess he's loving the experience. He does it with pride and joy. He doesn't even mind if you leave him all alone as long as he's got space and he isn't locked up. He's ready to go all the way, exploring every possible inch. Quite interesting and tasking especially when I have to chase after him wondering where he's actually headed- no where. Something I find more fascinating is that there are times when he actually wants to relish a time to grab my finger and we just walk together within the house. I think its a time he really enjoys especially doing it just for the fun of it and other times to help him communicate a need or play time(football). As reluctant as I get sometimes to grab him by the hand and walk around with him, I never get tired of it and try not to disappoint him. A deep part of me feels glad and happy that I am being a part of his life.
In the same way I am learning daily to let go of my strengths and freedom in search of God's hand to hold and allow HIM (God) lead the way. There are a good number of things I feel confident I can do all by myself without the thought of God but its equally important to draw strength and confidence from God to know that I am doing the mind, purpose and plan of God per time. Its better to walk with God and achieve His will than to run and achieve much without His involvement. Will you grab hold of God and make your life's journey(walk) with Him. He said "...I will never leave you nor forsake you"(Heb 13: 5), so you can trust Him. Psalm 23:3 says "even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil because thou areth with me". Your walk through life can be confident and assuring when you do it with Jesus. Walk with Him. He will never disappoint you.

Please accept my apology. Thank you

Hello followers and friends.
I have considered it important to apologise to every one who has ever viewed this blogue. this is tied to one reason, a friend of mine left a message for me some weeks back that he has been going through my blogue for about a year and he observed that I never said hi.
I have had to really think about the implcations and how best to deal with the issue. I also tried to justify myself saying it isn't meant to be an interactive blogue but I always look out for comments and reactions. So it actually left me defenseless.
I could easily have just put up another post and start with hello or hi because I am almost certain that a large majority may not notice or pay attention to it but I thought it will be better to come out straight at you and let you know there is a heart that sincerely loves you behind every post.
I sincerely apologise for threating you as statistics- another 1 adding up to the number of visits, which is bad. I hope you accept it and duely send in your comments from time to time. I will consciously try to keep up with posting an article per month(minimum) but please bear with my inabilities at times. It is tied to so many things - technology, work, family, projects etc. Please be aware that through it all, you also have a special place in my heart. Got to run, my baby(son) just called for my attention. Have a wonderful season of achievements. Thank you.

Relationships: finding the right person

It is no longer strange to hear of break ups or divorce in our generation. Some Hollywood stars have more than you can count with your fingers. In this part of the world (Nigeria), a divorce or break up seemed like a taboo until recent years that it has become near normal. The effect it leaves isn't usually palatable for one or both parties involved. In cases where relatives, friends or children have become part of the relationship then the ripple effect extends further. This presents a reason to share this secret of how to find the right person. The right person to many have attributes as tall, dark, handsome, cute, sexy, pretty, hot, busty, well built and MONEY(a constant). As well thought out as this is, it will be faulty if inner qualities aren't a major preference.

The right person for you should be someone that you can confidently say has been specially prepared for you by God. The person will complete you; complement you and improve you. Your union with the person will move you closer to fulfilling your purpose in life as you represent same in the person's life. This doesn't exclude both of you from committing your efforts to keep the fire burning.

If you will have "this" right person then you must be ready to follow this one principle- trust God to help you through it. Its a principle we see in Matthew6:25-34 which when summed up says 'seek first the kingdom of God and its righteousness...all these things will be added unto you'-v33. It means pursue, follow intently, be passionate, be aligned to the life, ways and purpose of God's kingdom and He will attend to your needs. It can be simply expressed as "mind God's business and He will mind your business". It is about resting in God and acknowledging that you can't do it by yourself or by your standards. Trusting Him to bring someone He has(or will) prepare for you while He's preparing you too as you submit to His Lordship. The confidence you need to have is that "your father in heaven knows you need these things"-v32. God is aware that you need a companion that will complement and help you achieve His purpose for you. So you can trust Him totally.

I understand this may be difficult because of different pressures, challenges and your personal detailed preference(s) but I implore you to surrender on the fact that you are limited in your knowledge of person(s), the future and control over both. God sees all things, knows all things(and persons) and can do all things. If you will trust God I'm sure He will orchestrate the meeting with that person He has prepared to walk with you through life's journey. The meeting and awareness(of the person) will happen at the right time. I pray you are strengthened in your inner man to stay trusted in Him as you are being built up as you passionately seek Him.

Dear friend, God never fails. He can be trusted all the way. Turn your standards, searchlights, lists, ways and passions to Him in the search for the right person for you. Say a sincere prayer to Him about this. Let go and Let God, He never fails.

Do have a great season.

Grace - Eternal &

"Grace that saved a wretch like me.."..so amazing. A significant thing about God's grace that remains amazing is the eternal effect it has had on every believer and that includes you and me. The effect of grace outnumbers any physical effect no matter how glorious it may be. I would like us to take a cue from the book of Hebrews, chapter 12 from verse 18 to 24. It states disparities between Mount Sinai and Mount Zion, that is Law and Grace respectively. Then in verse 21 it says 'Moses himself was so frightened at the sight that he said, “I am terrified and trembling.”'(NLT) The Law came with a strong statement that left even the bearer (Moses) trembling. All that the law offered was physical, filled with indignation and fear to its observers.

It is worthy of note that the law brought death to 3,000 people after it was enacted. On the other hand, GRACE came with life and 3,000 people were saved on the day of Pentecost after it was enacted through the Holy Spirit. All that Grace offers at Mount Zion is spiritual and eternal. The effect is uncommon and the platform brings comfort that shows mercy. Verse 24 of Hebrews 12 says "You have come to Jesus, the one who mediates the new covenant between God and people, and to the sprinkled blood, which speaks of forgiveness instead of crying out for vengeance like the blood of Abel." (NLT)
Grace has left us eternally bettered and it is hinged on forgiveness through the blood of Jesus Christ.

All that grace has done has spiritual and eternal effects.

No matter what your present situation is saying in the physical, in the realm of the spirit you have been brought to a place of uncommon feat with God: "..You have come to God himself.."(verse 23).

Plug into the amazing Grace of God that is beyond the physical realm and transcends into the heavens where Christ is seated in God.
